The 4 Key Points to Check for Compliance
A compliant mailbox simultaneously meets these four requirements. If even one is missing, the mailbox will be deemed non-compliant, and delivery may be suspended.
Criteria for Mailbox Compliance
- — Deposit Compartment: Presence of a 'milk box' (15 × 25 cm opening) in addition to the letter compartment. Often absent on older mailboxes.
- — Internal Dimensions: Letters: 10 × 25 × 35.5 cm min. · Deposit: 15 × 25 × 35.5 cm min. · Slot: 25 × 2.5 cm. Insufficient depth and slot size often lead to refusal.
- — Location: Property line (house) or free access from the street (apartment building), slot facing the street. Never behind a closed door.
- — Labeling & Condition: Name on the front (never on the flap), functional flap and lock. Corrosion and broken flap mean non-compliance.

Renovate or Replace?
It all depends on the defect found. We always choose the most economical option that remains compliant.

How do I know if my mailbox needs to be compliant?
Check four points: two compartments (letters + deposit), sufficient internal dimensions (letters 10 × 25 × 35.5 cm, deposit 15 × 25 × 35.5 cm, slot 25 × 2.5 cm), a location at the property line or accessible from the street, and a legible name on the front. Can an existing mailbox be renovated or does it need to be replaced?
It depends on the defect. A replaceable lock or flap can be repaired. But a mailbox without a deposit compartment or with insufficient dimensions cannot be brought up to standard by simple repair: it must be replaced with a compliant model. We assess the existing situation during the survey and propose the most economical option.
Who pays for compliance in an apartment building?
The property owner, at their expense (OPO art. 73), with a compliant and labeled mailbox per dwelling. The tenant does not have to pay anything. For property managers, we offer a park audit and coordinated replacement.
Is mailbox compliance really mandatory?
Yes. If the mailbox is not compliant, Swiss Post can, after warning, suspend home delivery (OPO art. 31 para. 2 let. c). Compliance is therefore not optional: it is the condition for receiving your mail.
